Updated historic home in the popular Copeland District.  Chock full of charm and solid year-round comfort, too.  Sited near tranquil Naushon Park.  Within an easy walk of town and beach. Fireplaces, mahogany trim, detailed painting.  A mix of family and entertainment areas, indoors and out.  Main house with four bedrooms, two romantic baths, upper deck and whimsical cuppola.  Detached two-bay garage with second-story studio and full bath. Plus a separate, treed buffer lot.

Serene, custom-designed contemporary at Mink Meadows. Main house featuring a central family pavillion flanked by separate master and guest pavillions. Floor to ceiling glass doors in every room, blending the interior with the outdoors.  Cherry paneling.  Oversize floor tiles.  Lush gardens, mature trees and stone walls.  All this plus a private, sun-filled guest house, privileges at the association beach on the Sound and advance placement on the Golf Club’s membership waiting list.

Fair Weather Friends Update

For My Fair Weather Friends and Other Friends, Too

August in July! What a hot, hot summer we’ve had thus far. Thanks to our coastal climes, the Vineyard has been a tad cooler than America. Then again, I dare say, the Vineyard is always “cooler” than America. :-)

Summer 2010, Part I, has not been free of drama: A visiting cyclist lost her life in an accident on State Road in Vineyard Haven -- a reminder to us all to walk our bikes on that busy stretch. And the iconic Coast Guard boathouse in Menemsha went up in a six-alarm inferno, incinerating the dock and boats but not people, thank goodness. Menemsha is still “open” and lovely, so go visit. Not even a fire can cancel sunset on Menemsha Beach.

The good times otherwise rolled: The July 4th parade and fireworks in Edgartown . . . the Tisbury Street Fair . . . the yacht race for the Vineyard Cup . . . the 175th birthday celebration of the Oak Bluffs “Campground.”

Business update: In Vineyard Haven, Tisberry (get it?) Frozen Yogurt & Smoothies is serving up luscious low-fat, low-cal treats. (How come nobody thought of this before?)  Flatbread Company is tossing healthful pizzas at Nectar's from noon till night. (Grab one after a day at Long Point Beach.) Conroy Apothecary of West Tisbury opened a much-needed outlet in Oak Bluffs at the beautifully restored home of the former town library, which also houses three new affordable housing units. Good move!

Edgartown Hardware left its little brick Main Street storefront of 64 years for roomier digs on the West Tisbury Road. Carol Craven Gallery, purveyor of fine art to die for, moved yet again -- this time, to a homey atmosphere back in West Tisbury. The Morning Glory Farm store expanded without losing its sweet, organic ambience. Square Rigger cleverly introduced a takeout window for its lobster and seafood specialties. And (drum roll, please) Lola’s has returned to Seaview Avenue, serving up its popular New Orleans style fare and nightowl scene.

Alley’s General Store is advertising “emergency underpants.” I have no idea . . . .

Pace yourselves, people: August is nigh, promising the usual heavy-duty calendar of festivals and fund-raisers. Rumors of Vineyard nuptials for Chelsea Clinton proved wrong, but rumors of the return of the Obamas were on the money: POTUS will be on-island August 19 to 29.

I hope, most of all, that you are on-island. You're always welcome to visit me in the Vineyard Haven office. (Advance notice is a big help this time of year.) Our Oak Bluffs office didn’t reopen this summer, but I’ve still got my antennae tuned to the real estate market island-wide. And we’ve still got A/C . . . .

Warm wishes,

Shelley Christiansen

P.S.  My Vineyard commentaries still air on the Cape & Islands NPR station every other Friday.
