FAIR WEATHER FRIEND UPDATE
Happy 2009 to my fair weather friends and other friends, too!

The new year on Martha’s Vineyard dawned bright with sunshine, cornflower skies, indigo seas and a fluffy carpet of new snow.  Wind chill: 13 below zero, but never mind.

It’s been a while since the last FWF Update, so here’s a really brief recap of the off-season thus far:

  • The Vineyard’s worst kept secrets -- September and October– were glowing, beach-friendly, tranquil and abundant with the last of the local corn and tomatoes.
  • The fish were less than cooperative with the 63rd annual Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby, but the late year harvest of bay scallops has been spectacular (and delicious).
  • The new MV Hospital building sprouted like a weed and got topped off ceremoniously in October.
  • The high school gridiron Vineyarders washed ashore Nantucket and crushed the Whalers 43 to 22 to
capture the Island Cup for the sixth consecutive year.
  • The beautiful Yoga Barn opened in Chilmark to rave reviews.  And at last, we learned that popular yoga instructor Anderson Bourell spent Summer ’08 at an ashram in India in lieu of Inkwell Beach.
  • Fire-stricken Bunch of Grapes bookstore is under reconstruction, not to mention new management, with
plans of reopening in springtime.  Meanwhile, grateful bibliophiles are flocking to BOG’s temporary
    quarters on Church Street.
  • Islanders queued up with their treasures at the MV Museum’s Appraisal Day to get the lowdown, good or bad, from guest appraisers of Antiques Roadshow renown. No retirement in sight for me . . . .
  • Last but not least:  The holiday season!   Glittering stores, homes and harbor fronts . . . choral concerts . . . inn tours . . . Donaroma’s “Evening of Enchantment” . . . MV Hospital’s “Tree of Lights”. . . the chowder contest . . . hayrides . . . the parade in Edgartown . . . breakfast with Santa . . . artisan gift shows . . . the Nutcracker Suite . . . Kwanzaa potluck supper with the NAACP . . .  and finally, Last Night/First Day festivities in Vineyard Haven.

Think not that the Island snoozes for the remainder of winter.  Here come:  the annual chili contest . . . Film Society screenings . . . a Felix Neck moonlight meander  . . . Sunday conservation land hikes . . . skating on Seth’s Pond . . . the best deals of the year at shops, restaurants, spas and hotels . . . the MV 20 Miler road race . . . holiday weekend events celebrating Martin Luther King, St. Valentine and America’s presidents.  Heck, the Island is even having its own presidential inaugural ball (attire: “Vineyard formal”).  So why not come for a winter fling?  Thirteen below was just a fluke. Honest.

Darn:  Just as restaurateur Deon Thomas (of The Cornerway) prepares to launch a new eatery on Circuit Avenue, I’ve relocated to our office in Vineyard Haven.  Please note my new contact information and stop by our lovely digs on Church Street to say Hi!
